Stop Ruining Your Bedroom – Avoid These Design Mistakes

Hello Reader,

Last week I visited a beautifully furnished home, but the bedroom felt… off. The colors were perfect, the furniture was expensive, yet something about the layout made the space feel cramped and restless.

In today’s newsletter, we’re looking at the most common bedroom design mistakes that can ruin even the best-looking rooms.

Lighting temperature sets the mood of a bedroom more than most people realize. Warm white (around 2700K) or soft white (around 3000K) creates a cozy, relaxing feel perfect for winding down. But daylight glow (4000K) or crystal white glow (5000K) can make a bedroom feel harsh, overly bright, and clinical — more like an office than a restful retreat.

Always combine different lights like ambient lighting, task lamps, sconces and wall lights because layering creates a warm and cozy bedroom atmosphere, unlike a single harsh ceiling light that makes the room feel flat and cave-like.

In the first layout, the closet is far from the entry, so you have to walk around the bed each time. The bed blocks movement, and the bathroom is the first thing you see when you enter. In the better layout, the closet is near the entrance, keeping movement easy and the bed area undisturbed.

The bathroom is the first thing you see when you walk in, which takes away the cozy feel of the bedroom. In the better layout, the closet is right at the entrance, keeping the bed area undisturbed and movement easy. A small lobby before the bedroom hides the bathroom, making the space feel calmer and more private.

Switches placed too high are uncomfortable to reach, and sockets too low beside the bed can strain cables and make plugging in devices awkward. Lowering the switches to a comfortable height and raising the bedside sockets slightly makes them easier to use and keeps cables safe.

In chapter 5 of my 100 Home Design Mistakes and Easy Fixes ebook, I cover all these mistakes in detail, with over 100 mistakes and their fixes included.

The first mistake is that when someone enters, they can see the entire house at a glance, and even passersby can get a view inside if the main door is slightly open. Hello Reader, Most design mistakes at home don’t show up until they become a safety hazard or an everyday frustration. Let’s break down a few that can easily be avoided. Unsafe Guardrails and Kitchen LayoutsLow guardrails may look sleek but they are unsafe, especially for kids.
